ABOUT THE WORKSHOP
Experimental designs provide a powerful lens to determine causality. However, relatively few entrepreneurship studies use an experimental design. Recently, several calls have been made for more experimental studies in entrepreneurship research (e.g., Acs, Audretsch, Desai, & Welpe, 2010; Aguinis & Lawal, 2012; Hsu, Simmons, & Wieland, 2017), and leading journals in the field, such as the Journal of Business Venturing and Entrepreneurship Education & Pedagogy have developed special issues on using experimental methodologies (e.g., Costa, Santos, Schenkel, Tegtmeier, & Hytti, 2021; Williams, Wood, Mitchell, & Urbig, 2019).
In this paper development workshop, we aim to support scholars who are working on experiments as a methodology in entrepreneurship research.
Although studies using experimental designs are a great way to establish causal relations, designing, conducting, and analyzing experiments are not easy undertakings. To support early career scholars in this endeavor, ECSB Special Interest Group on Experiments organizes the fifth paper development workshop on Conducting Experiments in Entrepreneurship Research. In this workshop, we aim to support and bring together (early career) scholars who are working with experimental designs as a methodology in entrepreneurship research.
The workshop consists of two main activities: 1) Plenary keynote session and panel session; and 2) Paper presentations, discussions and lively interactions with peers and experts (in breakout rooms).
The keynote speaker of this edition will be: Prof. Dr. Michael Gielnik (Leuphana University, Germany).
We are also pleased to have a group of highly knowledgeable and experienced researchers joining us as Workshop Facilitators. They will provide in-depth feedback on the papers submitted by participants, helping to enrich the discussions and strengthen the research.
During this workshop you will:
FOR WHOM?
The workshop is targeted at PhD candidates, postdocs, and (early-stage) Assistant Professors working on studies in entrepreneurship research using experimental designs. The submissions can be co-authored (with senior scholars), but the leading author and potential participant of the workshop should be an early/mid-career researcher. Working papers will be selected based on both the theoretical contribution to the field and the rigor of the implementation of experimental methods.
Limited spots are available! With a small group setting, all participants will have the opportunity to present their work and receive both peer and expert feedback on their working papers.
SUBMISSIONS
To apply for participation in the workshop, please submit your work until May 25, 2025. We welcome two types of submissions:
A) Full working paper: studies that have been fully carried out and the paper is at the writing stage.
If you have conducted an experiment and would like to receive guidance on how to, for instance report your study and improve its story line, argumentation, address the suitability of the analyses or reporting of the results, we welcome your submission as a full working paper. Please follow these submission guidelines for your working paper:
B) Design stage papers: studies at the methodological design phase.
If you are currently designing a study where you will use experimental design methods and you are seeking guidance on, for instance making sure the design is sound and robust, we welcome your submission as a design stage paper. Please note that you must have a research idea, research question, theoretical contribution, and basic study design for your submission to be considered. To submit your extended abstract, please follow these guidelines:
All submissions should be submitted via the submission link.
