SUMMARY:ECSB SocChange SIG webinar on Polanyi and entrepreneurship for social change
DESCRIPTION:How can the work of Karl Polanyi inform entrepreneurship research? Please join us for the ECSB SocChange SIG webinar on Polanyi and entrepreneurship for social change. \nWe will explore how the work of Karl Polanyi can inform entrepreneurship research in a time of social and environmental crisis. Karl Polanyi’s work builds on a critical analysis of the relationship between market and society\, warning against the disembedding of the economy from society. A critique that resonates with the concerns about the ability of markets and profit seeking entrepreneurs to deliver the solutions needed to address climate change and increasing social and regional inequalities shared by many within and outside the entrepreneurship research community. \nThe conceptual vocabulary of Polanyi including his ground-breaking ideas of embeddedness\, the double movement\, and the substantive economy\, offers fertile ground for re-thinking and expanding our understanding of what entrepreneurship is\, and can be. \nIn this webinar we will explore new avenues for entrepreneurship research using Polanyian ideas. The webinar will feature presentations by entrepreneurship scholars that have used Polanyis work in empirical and conceptual analysis as well as interactive sharing of ideas and visions for future entrepreneurship research. \nThe speakers include Michael Roy (Stirling University)\, Vicky Nowak\, and Caroline Parkinson (both Manchester Metropolitan University). \nThe webinar should be of interest to all entrepreneurship scholars interested in new conversations about the role of entrepreneurship in society and in societal change – in particular those looking for new alternative theoretical vocabularies to engage in reflective and critical explorations of this topic. \nWebinar Facilitator: Steffen Korsgaard (University of Southern Denmark) \nParticipation in the webinar is free of charge but registration is required. Register: https://us02web.zoom.us/meeting/register/joTaMyuxRNy94RuEYf52GA \nMore information and to join the SocChangeSIG\, visit: https://ecsb.org/socchange-sig/

SUMMARY:4th Annual RENT Abstract Writing Workshop
DESCRIPTION:This interactive workshop taking place online on Wednesday 23 April 2025 at 14:00-16:30 CEST offers support on writing an abstract to RENT Conference to be organised in Enschede on 19-21 November 2025. \nAbout this event\nDo you want to submit to RENT in Enschede this year? And have you… \n\nalready planned to submit\, but need some feedback (especially if it is one of the first times that you submit to the RENT)?\nconsidered a submission\, but are not sure whether your work is a good fit for the RENT?\na first draft or sketch of your submission and want to further work on it with your peers?\n\nIf any of these conditions apply to you\, join us for this year’s Abstract Writing Workshop! Together\, we will meet on Wednesday 23 April 2025 at 14:00-16:30 CEST online via Zoom and first\, get some tips from experienced ECSB members to improve the chances of our submission. While this provides a good point to get started\, the majority of this workshop will be spent writing the abstract\, getting and giving feedback and jointly reflecting our writing process with support from experienced advisors. \nWith this interactive workshop\, we aim to contribute to high-quality submissions of extended abstracts for the RENT and\, from an individual participant’s perspective\, we will actually get (most of) the writing done. This workshop entails: \n\nExpert’s advice on abstract writing for the RENT\nWorking individually on your writing\nReflecting together in small groups\nGiving and receiving feedback from experienced advisors\nDiscuss challenges with experts and colleagues\n\nThis means that this is an actual workshop in which you will actually work on your own abstracts. To get the most out of this\, please prepare a draft version of your abstract beforehand. This can be a rough sketch in bullet points\, but bring along a version that you can further work on. \nSee the RENT 2025 Conference website:\nhttps://rent-conference.org/\nhttps://rent-conference.org/rent-2025/conference-call-preamble\nhttps://rent-conference.org/submission/submission-deadline-instructions \nNew optional writing session this year: Do you want to continue working on your submission and finalise your writing after receiving feedback? Then join us after the workshop for an hour (16.30-17.30) of focused writing time using the Pomodoro technique! This is optional for all workshop participants\, please indicate when registering if you would like to take advantage of this. \nLet’s get the abstract writing done together! \nOrganizers\nThis workshop is organized as a joint initiative from several ECSB country vice presidents\, represented by: \n\nSimon Schmidt (ECSB country VP for Germany)\nVerena Meyer (Germany)\nRenata Osowska (ECSB country VP for UK)\nPekka Stenholm (Finland)\n\nParticipation\nParticipation is free\, but a registration is required by 16 April 2025. The registered participants will receive a link to a brief survey\, providing us with some information to ensure efficient group work\, and a Zoom link to join the meeting. \n> Register: https://link.webropolsurveys.com/EP/B5E9D3938E2680CD \nContact person\nVerena Meyer (verena.meyer(at)leuphana.de) \nPS. RENT submission deadline is May 15\, 2025.

SUMMARY:Harnessing Emotions when Teaching Entrepreneurship - Educator Workshop
DESCRIPTION:Negative experiences are inevitable in entrepreneurship. They can teach the most valuable lessons\, but they can also be discouraging and cause students to retreat. This free workshop\, led by Dr Eliana Crosina\, Babson College\, dives into the critical role of emotions in entrepreneurial learning and explores how negative experiences can become powerful catalysts for personal and professional growth. \nRead more and register by 18 March 2025: Harnessing Emotions When Teaching Entrepreneurship – SSES Learninglab \n

SUMMARY:ECSB Webinar by SocChange SIG - “Entrepreneurship and Social Change"
DESCRIPTION:We are thrilled to invite you to the first webinar of the ECSB SocChange SIG in which we discuss how we frame entrepreneurship for social change\, and for whom and with what effects. SUMMARY:9th Effectuation 2024 Conference
DESCRIPTION:The 9th Effectuation Conference will be organised prior the RENT 2024 Conference on 12-13 November 2024 in nantes\, France. The conference theme is “Effectuation: Bridging Research and Practice”.  Effectuation has inspired a generation of researchers and practitioners to see entrepreneurship through a different lens. By focusing on means at hand\, letting go of preconceived plans\, building through collaboration\, and embracing uncertainty\, aspiring entrepreneurs have earned a toolbox that catalyzed the design of more creative and durable businesses. \nEach year\, our community expands through the valuable exchanges that occur at our conference. These include the design of new research projects\, the development of educational tools\, and critical debates on the far-reaching impact of effectual thinking. This year\, we will dedicate the 9th Effectuation Conference to “Bridging Research and Practice”.  We invite researchers\, authors\, educators\, policy makers and other persons of interest to submit their work.  Come to the conference to engage in a discussion about how effectuation can be practiced in the real world! \nDuring our two days together\, we will explore: \n\nHow can effectuation be practiced by entrepreneurs and managers?\nWhat other disciplines can benefit from effectuation theory? And how?\nWhat is the value of effectuation when uncertainty is low(er)?\n\nEffectuation is at the vanguard of entrepreneurship research and practice as a scientifically validated method that arms aspiring entrepreneurs with a toolkit to design bold\, creative\, and unexpected solutions. In our post-pandemic world where global challenges threaten to upend our lives with unprecedented crises\, teaching effectuation as means to forge better futures was never this urgent. \nCo-branded with ECSB and scheduled in tandem with the RENT Conference\, the 2024 Effectuation Conference will take place in Nantes\, France. We provide a description of each of the elements of this conference\, followed by a daily agenda\, with updates available on the conference website: http://www.effectuation.org \nIn the tradition of Effectuation Conference in past years\, the format will offer plenary sessions as well as small group research and practice “pods” where your submissions can be developed into full-fledged research articles and teaching materials. We will\, of course\, also enjoy the “effectual” dinner and debrief as usual. \nImportant Deadlines:\nPaper submission: May 15\, 2024 \nAuthor notification: July 31\, 2024 \nRegistration opens: August 15\, 2024 \nRegistration closes: September 30\, 2024

SUMMARY:ESU 2024 Conference and Doctoral Programme
DESCRIPTION:ESU 2024 CONFERENCE & DOCTORAL PROGRAM \n“TECHNOLOGY FOR BETTER FUTURES” \nThe Institute of Innovation Management at JKU Business School\, Johannes Kepler University Linz – JKU invites you to join the ESU 2024 Conference and Doctoral Program from 16 to 20 September 2024. \nThe aim of ESU is to strengthen European research traditions and networks in entrepreneurship by focusing both on academic sessions and on the culture and heritage that the host country and region have to offer. \nBi-annually\, the ESU network organizes an event that combines the ESU Doctoral Program and the academic ESU Conference. This year\, the event is hosted at Johannes Kepler University in Linz\, Austria. \nThe ESU Doctoral Program \nDuring the ESU Doctoral Program PhD students at different stages of their projects – i.e.\, early\, intermediate and mature stage – work together with established researchers on current topics of theoretical and methodological aspects and practices in entrepreneurship research. The exchange is organized in two formats: \nPlenary sessions on specific topics with established researchers as keynote speakers\, who will inspire and invite critical reflection on a variety of topics related to entrepreneurship such as interesting issues\, innovative methodologies\, and the publication process. \nGroup discussions and presentations where PhD students present their own work\, discuss it with peers\, and receive feedback from more senior scholars. \nParticipating in the ESU Doctoral Program and completing all its tasks gives you up to 6 ECTS. The tasks comprise: \n\nA presentation of your own work. The content of the presentation will vary according to the progress of the PhD project. Early stage PhDs\, who have not started their research project\, will present their research proposals. Intermediate stage PhDs will present the theoretical underpinning and methodological design of their first research together with preliminary results\, if available. Mature stage PhDs\, who are close to completion\, will present their projects and outcomes.\nA written review of one of your peers’ work that forms the basis of a short oral statement in one of the sessions.\nA literature-based reflection of a topic related to your own PhD project. This reflection will be inspired by the input you receive during the plenary sessions in the ESU Doctoral Program.\n\nThe ESU Conference (Wed. 18 September) \nIn addition to the ESU Doctoral Program the event also features the ESU Conference\, which is an academic conference taking place on Wed. 18th September. The ESU conference is open to all attendees of the ESU Doctoral Program and additional international researchers who join us for the conference day to present their research. SUMMARY:3E 2024 Conference
DESCRIPTION:Through an innovative and non-traditional format\, the 3E Conference establishes a new paradigm for entrepreneurship conferences. It offers an inclusive setting to fully collaborate with researchers\, educators and policymakers to debate and exchange the best practices\, the major challenges and novel advances in entrepreneurship education with a special and unique focus on Europe. Unlike more traditional academic events\, this conference puts the spotlight in problems and questions; the format is ‘unplugged’ without power point presentations. Instead\, engaging round table discussions are held with participants who have read papers beforehand. Further\, the keynote speakers are chosen from among the best submission of the participants. \n\nConference theme: Entrepreneurship Education – a playground for impact \n\nOver the past years\, Entrepreneurship Education (EE) has increasingly become more mature in its theory and practice. Yet\, it has not lost its playfulness and its willingness to try out new things. We believe EE can and should be seen as a playground for educators\, scholars\, and students; and continue to invite innovative action and experimentation. At the same time\, this led to a variety of challenges and contexts for players to solve through creativity\, interaction and mutual learning. That is why this edition encourages the 3E community to present novel solutions to encourage tilting EE towards social development\, mental and physical wellbeing\, and sustainability. We need to promote innovation\, creativity as well as responsible risk-taking. And most importantly\, we need to think of what we want our students to learn\, what our students want to learn\, and how they best learn.  Therefore\, we welcome contributions that present\, explore and question the playfulness of EE in relation towards social and sustainable entrepreneurial initiatives. \nWho should attend?\nPotential participants include entrepreneurship education educators and researchers\, research-based educators from primary\, secondary\, and higher institutions\, practitioners involved in entrepreneurship support programs including trainers\, policy makers and program managers\, and special interest group representatives from local or international organisations. \nAbout the program and the venues\nThe 3E Conference program will include three interactive days in the city of Amsterdam\, mainly in the vicinity of the AUAS Amstel Campus. A program that will have several pre- and post-events including\, welcome reception on Wednesday 15th (location to be announced)\, PDW Day (AUAS Amstel Campus)\, main conference (AUAS Amstel Campus)\, gala dinner with entertainment (location to be announced). As a participant\, we welcome you to stay longer to enjoy the beautiful canals of the vibrant city of Amsterdam and its famous museums such as the Rijksmuseum\, Stedelijk Museum and Van Gogh Museum. \n\n\n\nImportant Dates\n\nSubmission Deadline for Abstracts: 1 December 2023\nNotification of Acceptance: 31 January 2024\nSubmission Deadline for Final Contributions: 15 March 2024\nEarly-Bird Registration Deadline: 15 March 2024\nConference: 15-17 May 2024

SUMMARY:Educator Workshop: What to Teach in Entrepreneurship Education
DESCRIPTION:In the dynamic field of entrepreneurship education\, one challenge looms especially large for its educators: the question of content. What exactly should be taught? With entrepreneurship education in continuous high demand\, universities are encouraged to provide more and varied programmes that cater to the diverse interests of students and the changing demands of society. Deciding what to teach has thus become increasingly complex\, reflecting the need for a curriculum that is both relevant and adaptive. \nThis workshop\, led by Dr. Colette Henry\, offers a fresh perspective on selecting educational content. It considers the needs of the entrepreneurship educator against the backdrop of an ever-changing global landscape\, marked by shifts in social\, economic\, environmental\, and technological factors. \nThe workshop aims to examine the role of the contemporary entrepreneurship educator with a focus on overcoming the challenge of content selection. Participants will have the opportunity to: \n\nGain insights into some of the many factors influencing the content of entrepreneurship programmes and affecting the decision on ‘what to teach’\nShare experiences and strategies for addressing content selection\, reflecting on personal teaching practices\nExplore potential future challenges in content selection and how to prepare for them\n\nBy the end of the workshop\, educators will be better equipped to navigate the complexities of content selection in entrepreneurship education\, ensuring their programs are both relevant and forward-thinking. \nParticipation in the workshop is free but a registration by 17 April 2024 is required. \nMore information and link to registration: https://learninglab.sses.se/workshops/what-to-teach-in-entrepreneurship-education/

SUMMARY:'Learning to fly: Entrepreneurship Research as a living process of inquiry' workshop
DESCRIPTION:We are delighted to invite you to the upcoming ‘Learning to fly: Entrepreneurship Research as a living process of inquiry’ workshop\, supported by the European Council of Small Business and Entrepreneurship (ECSB) event fund\, and British Academy of Management (BAM) and hosted by the Management School’s Brett Centre for Entrepreneurship (BCfE). \nThis one-day event gathers academics form different disciplines\, including education and antropology\, who will share insights on the question of ‘how can we make inquiry into entrepreneurship more interesting and purposeful?’. \nFor any inquirer\, every moment can become the subject of their curiosity and a point of study. \nExploring human practice means dealing with what is discovered through thoughtful processing and appropriate action\, however\, any new process of inquiry requires the questioning of: \n\nThe relationship between ourselves and our roles as researchers\, writers and practitioners\nHow we enact our relationships with audiences and wider communities\nThe theories and concepts we work with in meaningful ways.\n\nStructured through a series of ‘Creative Acts’\, this interactive workshop seeks to re-discover\, re-explore and re-engage with what inquiry means to us\, as well as uncovering practices on what it means to be curious and whether and how researchers view entrepreneurship as a field of inquiry. \nAs well as challenging conventional canons of Entrepreneurship Scholarship\, we provide an opportunity to develop a more contextual and processual account of different methods of inquiry in social sciences. \nThe workshop is ideal for early\, mid and late career researchers seeking to discover and explore different methods of inquiry for Entrepreneurship Research. \nWe want to inspire you to think critically and engage reflexively with your own research practice\, in a session where multiple voices are able to find a space and talk to each other. \nRegister: https://www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/learning-to-fly-entrepreneurship-research-as-a-living-process-of-inquiry-tickets-763987696767?aff=oddtdtcreator

SUMMARY:Teaching Entrepreneurship in degrowth economics: Exploring the potential and challenging the limits
DESCRIPTION:What would entrepreneurship look like in a world where economics was the science of social provisioning within material boundaries\, as is the case for degrowth economics? And how might we convey such an approach through our teaching in Entrepreneurship Education\, where we aim to inspire students for a transformed future? \nThis panel discussion explores the nature\, potential\, and limits of entrepreneurship education in degrowth economics. Post-consumerist values\, planetary limits to economic growth\, and the localization of value chains challenge conventional beliefs about economic growth including key assumptions in the present capitalistic system and promotes a paradigm shift towards degrowth. Despite the momentum toward degrowth\, educational approaches\, teaching methods\, and tools in entrepreneurship education remain anchored in growth-centric ideologies\, like green growth or sustainable growth. This raises critical questions: Can alternative paradigms find a place in entrepreneurship education? Are the established teaching principles still relevant\, or is a fundamental redesign necessary? How can these changes be practically incorporated into the educational landscape? \nThis ECSB co-branded panel discussion facilitates a critical discussion about the intersection of entrepreneurship education and degrowth by exploring both the potential and limits of a degrowth pedagogy in entrepreneurship education. Further\, the panelists will delve into discussions concerning innovative approaches to entrepreneurship education that align with the principles of degrowth\, focusing on sustainability\, ethics\, and societal well-being. \nConfirmed panelists:\nPatrick Elf\, Senior Research Fellow at Middlesex University London\nDiana Holmqvist\, Postdoctoral Research Fellow at Linköping University\nMelanie Rieback\, founder of the Post Growth Entrepreneurship (PGE) Incubator ‘Nonprofit Ventures’ and Radically Open Security.\nRobert Sheldon\, Associate Professor at ESCP Business School \nModerator: Thomas Long\, Associate Professor\, EDHEC Business School \nOrganisers:\nLinköping University: Diana Holmqvist and Karin Wigger\nEDHEC Business School: Thomas Long\nUniversity of Groningen: Emma Folmer\nNord University: Marit Breivik\, Siri Jakobson\, Marianne Steinmo and Iselin Mauseth Steira \nRegistration:\nPlease note that the event is open to ECSB and ISBE members and is limited to 50 participants. Places will be assigned on a first-come\, first-served basis according to the order of registration.

SUMMARY:Enterprise Education and Planetary Sustainability – Relationship and Actions
DESCRIPTION:An event with Manchester Metropolitan University and the University of Liverpool to explore the relationship between – and need for action regarding – Enterprise Education and Planetary Sustainability. \nWednesday 13 December 2023\, 2.15 – 4.15pm UTC +1\n \nSummary\nThis online event draws from research and action developed last year through an EEUK EERPF project – ‘Enterprise Education and Planetary Sustainability: What can EE do?’ \nThe session will start with a keynote from Dr Matteo Giusti\, a Future Fellow in Sustainability Science from the University of Surrey. His research looks at human-nature relationships at the individual and social scale to understand how modern civilisations might regenerate themselves towards a more sustainable future. Matteo leads a research programme on “Cultural Shifts on Sustainable Systems” at the Institute for Sustainability to produce knowledge\, policy recommendations\, and creative works that make sustainability the new normal. His keynote presentation will set the scene for the session by focusing on the fundamental drivers of unsustainable development and how our shared culture and relationship with nature has transformational potential. This will go at the core of the links between Enterprise Education and Planetary Sustainability. \nFollowing this\, insights and results from the EEUK/EERPF project ‘Enterprise Education and Planetary Sustainability: What can EE do?’ will be shared. The project\, developed by Dr Catherine Brentnall from Manchester Metropolitan University and Dr David Higgins from the University of Liverpool\, involved piloting a workshop process to catalyse change (towards sustainability) in Enterprise Education. \nFollowing a brief introduction to the project and the resources available to replicate the workshop process\, Catherine will share the results of a review into entrepreneurship and planetary boundaries and the possibilities of regenerative business design; and David will share the development of a new module which encompasses ethics and morals for more ecologically aware entrepreneurship. \nAttendees will have the opportunity to discuss and share practice in a plenary session and learn more about the development of a new EEUK Special Interest Group being proposed in this area. \nBenefits to delegate: \n\nThe opportunity to consider and question the role of Enterprise Educators and Enterprise Education in relation to planetary sustainability\, the climate crisis and ecological breakdown.\n\n\nRe-imagine the sort of practice and research that Enterprise Educators should pursue to contribute to moving away from Business as Usual.\n\nEngage in dialogue and connect with colleagues who share an interest or concern in this area. \nFREE TO ATTEND\nAs this Enterprise Exchange event is the latest development from a project that was funded by the EEUK Enterprise Education and Research Project Fund (EERPF)\, there is no fee for non-members to attend so that participation is as wide as possible. Everyone is invited to join this session and contribute to this vital conversation. \nREGISTER: https://www.enterprise.ac.uk/events/enterprise-education-and-planetary-sustainability-relationship-and-actions/

SUMMARY:8th Effectuation Conference: Building the Global Effectual Classroom
DESCRIPTION:Effectuation is at the vanguard of entrepreneurship research and practice as a scientifically validated method that arms aspiring entrepreneurs with a toolkit to design bold\, creative\, and unexpected solutions. In our post-pandemic world where global challenges threaten to upend our lives with unprecedented crises\, teaching effectuation as means to forge better entrepreneurs was never this urgent. \nThe 8th effectuation conference theme is “Building the Global Effectual Classroom”. We invite authors to submit their work and come to the conference to engage in a discussion about bringing teaching\, practice\, and research by leveraging our global community with a presence in all five continents. Besides the traditional conference discussion\, we will host a mastermind of both experienced and new researcher/educators aiming to launch a global research consortium that blends scientific rigor\, empirical relevance\, and impact. \nCo-branded with ECSB and scheduled in tandem with the RENT Conference\, the 2023 Effectuation Conference will take place in Gdansk\, Poland.

SUMMARY:ECSB - SEAANZ Webinar "Researching with practical impact – Making entrepreneurship and SME research relevant for policy makers"
DESCRIPTION:How can we make a practical difference with our research and contribute to positive societal change? For entrepreneurship and SME scholars informing and shaping policy and practices is often a key goal. However\, as researchers we get trained to do research\, but not how to generate and demonstrate impact i.e. the wider economic and societal benefits of our research\, which often leaves us ill-prepared to contribute to the growing impact agenda. \nIn this webinar we explore what impact is and why it is relevant. Drawing on scholars and practictioner from different national contexts\, we gain valuable insights into how to achieve practical impact for different policy stakeholders and we draw lessons on how to develop relevant impact pathways for our research and how to evidence the benefit gained by different stakeholders. \nFacilitator:\nMartina Battisti\, Professor of Entrepreneurship\, Grenoble Ecole de Management\, France \nSpeakers:\nNorin Arshed\, Professor of Entrepreneurship\, University of Dundee\, Scotland\nTanya Jurado\, Senior Lecturer of Entrepreneurship\, Massey University\, New Zealand\nStephen Roper\, Professor of Enterprise\, Director of the Enterprise Research Centre\, Warwick University\, UK\nMichael Schaper\, Adjunct Professor\, Curtin University and Council Member\, University of Canberra\, Australia \nRegister by 6 June HERE
