SUMMARY:Online workshop: Setting Students Free Through Entrepreneurship
DESCRIPTION:Ideally\, we’d like entrepreneurship to be a driver of both individual and collective emancipation. But what does it take for that to actually happen in practice? \nEntrepreneurship is often positioned as a way to increase freedom and agency\, but at the same time it is embedded in systems that can reinforce constraints\, inequalities\, and expectations around performance and responsibility. \nFor educators\, this raises a set of practical questions. What does it mean for entrepreneurship to be emancipatory? When and how does it support autonomy and agency\, and where are its limits? And how can these insights inform the way we design and teach entrepreneurship? \nThese are the questions explored in this SSES Educator Workshop. \nIn this context\, emancipation is not treated as an abstract ideal\, but as something that plays out in concrete situations: what choices students feel they have\, what risks they are expected to take\, and what kinds of futures are presented to them as possible. \nThe session is led by Michela Loi\, whose research explores how educational environments\, social contexts\, and learning processes shape entrepreneurial mindsets and behaviours. Her recent work focuses on entrepreneurship as a potential driver of emancipation\, which forms the basis for this workshop. \nAfter the workshop\, participants will be able to: \n\nExplain the concept of emancipation and distinguish it from related ideas such as empowerment and inclusion\nAnalyse when and how entrepreneurial activity can support—or limit—emancipatory processes in different contexts\nCritically reflect on the assumptions underlying their own teaching of entrepreneurship\nIdentify opportunities to design learning experiences that support autonomy\, agency\, and meaningful student engagement\nApply selected approaches or tools to make their entrepreneurship education more reflective\, inclusive\, and context-aware\n\nABOUT THE INSTRUCTOR\nMichela Loi is an Associate Professor of Organisation Studies and Entrepreneurship at the Department of Economics and Business Sciences\, University of Cagliari (Italy). She holds a PhD in Organisational Psychology\, and her research focuses on entrepreneurship education\, entrepreneurial learning\, and the role of universities in fostering entrepreneurial ecosystems. \nHer work investigates how educational environments\, social contexts\, and learning processes shape entrepreneurial mindsets\, intentions\, and behaviours. She has published research on entrepreneurship education\, entrepreneurial universities\, and the organisational dimensions of innovation\, contributing to international conferences and leading scholarly outlets in the field. She currently serves as Research Editor for Entrepreneurship Education and Pedagogy. Publications: Link \nRelated reading: Nurturing Responsible Entrepreneurs\, What to Teach in Entrepreneurship Education\, and Making Entrepreneurship Feel Doable.\nFor related learning\, see Entrepreneurial Mindset\, Design Thinking\, and Trendspotting and Future Thinking. \nFree participation\, registration required by 27 May 2026: https://learninglab.sses.se/workshops/setting-students-free-through-entrepreneurship/

SUMMARY:ECSB SocChange SIG Webinar: A critical discussion of the role of social entrepreneurship in social change
DESCRIPTION:Please join us for the SocChange SIG webinar on social entrepreneurship and its relationship with positive social change. \nIn this webinar we will explore critiques and potentials of social entrepreneurship? Under what circumstances can social entrepreneurship foster fundamental positive social change\, and under what circumstances does it end up reinforcing the market economy that produces increasing social inequality and environmental degradation? The webinar will feature short presentations by prominent entrepreneurship scholars before inviting a reflective and inclusive conversation about the potentials\, limitations and dark side of social entrepreneurship. \nThe webinar follows from our earlier online event about the work of Karl Polanyi and how it can inform entrepreneurship research. We continue the conversation\, picking up on how the insights of Polanyi generates critical questions about the role of social entrepreneurship. We combine this with perspectives from recent work by prominent social entrepreneurship scholars exploring the dark side of social entrepreneurship. \nConfirmed speakers include Frank Janssen (UC Louvain)\, Sophie Bacq (IMD)\, Anne Sophie Sabbatuci (Kelley School of Business)\, Vicky Nowak (Manchester Metropolitan)\, and Paola Raffaelli (IQS School of Management). \nThe webinar should be of interest to all entrepreneurship scholars interested in new conversations about the role of social entrepreneurship – in particular those looking for new alternative theoretical vocabularies to engage in reflective and critical explorations of this topic. \nThe webinar will take place on the 16th of March 15.30 to 17:00 Central European Time \nWebinar Facilitator: Steffen Korsgaard (University of Southern Denmark) and Verena Meyer (Leuphana University of Lüneburg) \nParticipation in the seminar is free of charge and registration is here: https://us02web.zoom.us/meeting/register/uc2TY0gDTb-X_IZxNCpc9g \nThe event is organized by the ECSB Entrepreneurship and Social Change SIG. \nMore details about the SIG at: Entrepreneurship and Social Change Special Interest Group | European Council for Small Business and Entrepreneurship

SUMMARY:Entrepreneurial Behaviour and Well-being: Challenges and Drivers
DESCRIPTION:E&I Research Group and the IUSEN Institute of Economy and Business\, at the University of Seville are delighted to host an online webinar on the intersection of entrepreneurial activity and personal well-being. \nEntrepreneurship role in innovation and economic activity is often celebrated. However\, beneath the narratives of success and ambition\, entrepreneurial activity is often characterized by substantial time pressure\, long hours\, financial uncertainty\, and emotional involvement in the venture. Under this pressure\, the entrepreneurs’ personal well-being —the presence of positive experiences and absence of negative experiences associated with running an entrepreneurial venture— may be affected. The entrepreneurs’ wellbeing can help them persist in the face of difficulties. Therefore\, understanding the challenges and drivers of entrepreneurial well-being and burnout is highly relevant for researchers\, policymakers\, and\, most importantly\, for those aspiring to or currently running their own businesses. The seminar brings two world-leading experts to explore this vital intersection. \nProgramme Schedule \n17:00: Welcome and Presentation – Francisco Liñán (Senior researcher at E&I research group) \n17:00: “The Entrepreneur’s Well-being” (+ Q&A) – Prof. Teemu Kautonen (NEOMA Business School\, France) \n18:00: “Emotional Demands and Entrepreneurial Burnout” (+ Q&A) – Prof. Paul Jones (Swansea University\, UK) \nParticipation is free of charge. SUMMARY:ECSB SocChange SIG webinar on Polanyi and entrepreneurship for social change
DESCRIPTION:How can the work of Karl Polanyi inform entrepreneurship research? Please join us for the ECSB SocChange SIG webinar on Polanyi and entrepreneurship for social change. \nWe will explore how the work of Karl Polanyi can inform entrepreneurship research in a time of social and environmental crisis. Karl Polanyi’s work builds on a critical analysis of the relationship between market and society\, warning against the disembedding of the economy from society. A critique that resonates with the concerns about the ability of markets and profit seeking entrepreneurs to deliver the solutions needed to address climate change and increasing social and regional inequalities shared by many within and outside the entrepreneurship research community. \nThe conceptual vocabulary of Polanyi including his ground-breaking ideas of embeddedness\, the double movement\, and the substantive economy\, offers fertile ground for re-thinking and expanding our understanding of what entrepreneurship is\, and can be. \nIn this webinar we will explore new avenues for entrepreneurship research using Polanyian ideas. The webinar will feature presentations by entrepreneurship scholars that have used Polanyis work in empirical and conceptual analysis as well as interactive sharing of ideas and visions for future entrepreneurship research. \nThe speakers include Michael Roy (Stirling University)\, Vicky Nowak\, and Caroline Parkinson (both Manchester Metropolitan University). \nThe webinar should be of interest to all entrepreneurship scholars interested in new conversations about the role of entrepreneurship in society and in societal change – in particular those looking for new alternative theoretical vocabularies to engage in reflective and critical explorations of this topic. \nWebinar Facilitator: Steffen Korsgaard (University of Southern Denmark) \nParticipation in the webinar is free of charge but registration is required. SUMMARY:Harnessing Emotions when Teaching Entrepreneurship - Educator Workshop
DESCRIPTION:Negative experiences are inevitable in entrepreneurship. They can teach the most valuable lessons\, but they can also be discouraging and cause students to retreat. So how can educators teach students how to navigate negative experiences\, while keeping them engaged and motivated? This free workshop\, led by Dr Eliana Crosina\, Babson College\, dives into the critical role of emotions in entrepreneurial learning and explores how negative experiences can become powerful catalysts for personal and professional growth. \nRead more and register by 18 March 2025: Harnessing Emotions When Teaching Entrepreneurship – SSES Learninglab \n

SUMMARY:Teaching Entrepreneurship in degrowth economics: Exploring the potential and challenging the limits
DESCRIPTION:What would entrepreneurship look like in a world where economics was the science of social provisioning within material boundaries\, as is the case for degrowth economics? And how might we convey such an approach through our teaching in Entrepreneurship Education\, where we aim to inspire students for a transformed future? \nThis panel discussion explores the nature\, potential\, and limits of entrepreneurship education in degrowth economics. Post-consumerist values\, planetary limits to economic growth\, and the localization of value chains challenge conventional beliefs about economic growth including key assumptions in the present capitalistic system and promotes a paradigm shift towards degrowth. Despite the momentum toward degrowth\, educational approaches\, teaching methods\, and tools in entrepreneurship education remain anchored in growth-centric ideologies\, like green growth or sustainable growth. This raises critical questions: Can alternative paradigms find a place in entrepreneurship education? Are the established teaching principles still relevant\, or is a fundamental redesign necessary? How can these changes be practically incorporated into the educational landscape? \nThis ECSB co-branded panel discussion facilitates a critical discussion about the intersection of entrepreneurship education and degrowth by exploring both the potential and limits of a degrowth pedagogy in entrepreneurship education. Further\, the panelists will delve into discussions concerning innovative approaches to entrepreneurship education that align with the principles of degrowth\, focusing on sustainability\, ethics\, and societal well-being. \nConfirmed panelists:\nPatrick Elf\, Senior Research Fellow at Middlesex University London\nDiana Holmqvist\, Postdoctoral Research Fellow at Linköping University\nMelanie Rieback\, founder of the Post Growth Entrepreneurship (PGE) Incubator ‘Nonprofit Ventures’ and Radically Open Security.\nRobert Sheldon\, Associate Professor at ESCP Business School \nModerator: Thomas Long\, Associate Professor\, EDHEC Business School \nOrganisers:\nLinköping University: Diana Holmqvist and Karin Wigger\nEDHEC Business School: Thomas Long\nUniversity of Groningen: Emma Folmer\nNord University: Marit Breivik\, Siri Jakobson\, Marianne Steinmo and Iselin Mauseth Steira \nRegistration:\nPlease note that the event is open to ECSB and ISBE members and is limited to 50 participants. Places will be assigned on a first-come\, first-served basis according to the order of registration.

SUMMARY:ECSB - SEAANZ Webinar "Researching with practical impact – Making entrepreneurship and SME research relevant for policy makers"
DESCRIPTION:How can we make a practical difference with our research and contribute to positive societal change? For entrepreneurship and SME scholars informing and shaping policy and practices is often a key goal. However\, as researchers we get trained to do research\, but not how to generate and demonstrate impact i.e. the wider economic and societal benefits of our research\, which often leaves us ill-prepared to contribute to the growing impact agenda. \nIn this webinar we explore what impact is and why it is relevant. Drawing on scholars and practictioner from different national contexts\, we gain valuable insights into how to achieve practical impact for different policy stakeholders and we draw lessons on how to develop relevant impact pathways for our research and how to evidence the benefit gained by different stakeholders. \nFacilitator:\nMartina Battisti\, Professor of Entrepreneurship\, Grenoble Ecole de Management\, France \nSpeakers:\nNorin Arshed\, Professor of Entrepreneurship\, University of Dundee\, Scotland\nTanya Jurado\, Senior Lecturer of Entrepreneurship\, Massey University\, New Zealand\nStephen Roper\, Professor of Enterprise\, Director of the Enterprise Research Centre\, Warwick University\, UK\nMichael Schaper\, Adjunct Professor\, Curtin University and Council Member\, University of Canberra\, Australia \nRegister by 6 June HERE

SUMMARY:ECSB Webinar "Stressors\, recovery and well-being of entrepreneurs"
DESCRIPTION:There is an increasing interest in entrepreneurs’ resilience and well-being from researchers and practitioners alike. This is because entrepreneurs’ resilience and ‘happiness’ relate to their creativity\, productivity\, and their business’ success (e.g.\, Stephan\, 2018; Wach\, Stephan\, Weinberger\, & Wegge\, 2020; Weinberger\, Wach\, Stephan\, & Wegge\, 2018). The Covid-19 pandemic has accelerated this interest. For instance\, our international project “Supporting Entrepreneurship during the Covid-19 Pandemic: A Global Study of Entrepreneurs’ Resilience and Well-being” documented the profound threat to entrepreneurs’ well-being and their businesses stemming from the Covid-19 pandemic. While entrepreneurs were occasionally thriving\, most struggled with increased stress and impaired mental well-being. Many lacked strategies to protect their well-being and some gave up eventually their businesses because of it. Existing research into recovery documents its positive effects but also highlights how difficult it can be to engage in recovery when work is particularly stressful (Sonnentag\, 2018). This presentation will show newly initiated research agenda on entrepreneurs’ recovery (Wach et al.\, 2020\, Weinberger et al.\, 2018; Williamson\, Gish\, & Stephan\, 2021)\, that is moving from documenting challenges in entrepreneurs’ well-being to implementing and testing recovery strategies to help enhance entrepreneurs’ well-being and their resilience. In this regard\, preliminary findings will be given about intervention to equip entrepreneurs with so-called recovery strategies\, i.e. strategies that are proven to aid recovery from work stress and thereby allow entrepreneurs to safeguard their well-being. \nAbout the speaker:\nDominika Wach is researcher and lecturer in the department of Work and Organizational Psychology at Technische Universität Dresden\, Germany. Her specialties are entrepreneurship and occupational health. Amongst others\, she published her research in Journal of Business Venturing\, Entrepreneurship Theory and Practice\, Journal of Small Business Management\, and International Small Business Journal. Dr. Wach was a head of a Polish partner institution and research team in research projects on success factors of SMEs in Germany\, Czech Republic\, and Poland funded by German Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF) and she has published on the topic of entrepreneurial performance\, well-being\, and recovery. Dominika Wach is a member of Academy of Management (AoM)\, European Council for Small Business and Entrepreneurship (ECSB)\, and German Psychological Society (DGPs). \nNOTE! SUMMARY:ECSB Online Symposium on “Masculinities and Entrepreneurship”
DESCRIPTION:Organised by Gender and Entrepreneurship Special Interest Group \nSymposium Panellists:\nUlla Hytti\, University of Turku\, Finland\nRenaud Redien-Collot\, ISC Paris Ecole de Commerce\, France\nAndreas Giazitzoglu\, University of Newcastle\, UK\nMiruna Radu-Lefebvre\, Audencia Business School\, France\nRobert Smith\, Independent Researcher\, UK\nElisabet Carine Ljunggren\, Nord University\, Norway \nFacilitators:\nNatalia Vershinina\nHelle Neergaard\nGry Agnete Alsos \nTopic Summary:\nTraditional masculine gender norms and values are often associated with entrepreneurship and business success. In many societies\, masculinity is often linked to traits such as competitiveness\, risk-taking\, assertiveness\, and individualism\, which are also seen as key traits for successful entrepreneurship. Historically\, entrepreneurship has been largely dominated by men\, and women have often faced significant barriers to entering the field. This has led to the development of a “masculinized” culture around entrepreneurship\, which can create challenges for other marginalized groups seeking to start their own businesses. \nOur panellists are experts of gender and masculinities in the context of entrepreneurship. The purpose of this symposium is to debunk some of the myths associated with how masculinities play out in entrepreneurship by exploring: Entrepreneurial Masculinity as a historical construct; Role model selection process in the context of male entrepreneurship; Gender dynamics and masculinity in family business contexts; Visualising the aesthetics of embodied masculine corporate and entrepreneurial identities; Entrepreneurial masculinities and fatherhood. \nNOTE! SUMMARY:Webinar “Advancing entrepreneurial ecosystem research”
DESCRIPTION:Welcome to join the ECSB webinar “Advancing entrepreneurial ecosystem research” with Dr. Christina Theodoraki on 8 March 2023 at 3:00-4:00 pm (CET). \nWhile the concept of an ecosystem is increasingly attracting the attention of researchers\, practitioners\, and governments\, there is still partial (and even limited) knowledge about how building a sustainable entrepreneurial ecosystem fits different contexts\, countries\, populations\, or industries. The objective of this research presentation is to shed light on this little-known concept in order to advance the discussion on territorial and international ecosystem dynamics based on current publications. This presentation aims at providing a research protocol with established and future avenues for research publication. Likewise\, best practices and models will be provided on how to advance research on entrepreneurial ecosystems. Finally\, research opportunities\, special issues and conferences will be shared. \nAbout the speaker:\nDr. Christina Theodoraki is an Associate Professor in entrepreneurship and strategic management at TBS Education (in Toulouse\, France)\, affiliate professor at the International University of Monaco\, Senior Research Fellow at the Institute for Development Strategies at the University of Indiana and Business Development Manager at the Entrepreneurial Ecosystem Research Network. She also leads the Babson Collaborative Research Group on Entrepreneurial Ecosystems. She is Editor of Small Business Economics: An Entrepreneurship Journal\, Associate Editor of Journal of Small Business Management and member of the associate editorial boards of Entrepreneurship Research Journal and Journal of the Knowledge Economy. Her research interests include entrepreneurial ecosystems\, entrepreneurial support\, and interorganizational strategies with a focus on business incubators. \nSee Christina’s full bio HERE \nThe webinar is free for ECSB and ISBE members\, but a registration is required. SUMMARY:ECSB Webinar with Prof. Monder Ram: "Critical engagement in diversity and entrepreneurship: Insights from the Centre for Research in Ethnic Minority Entrepreneurship"
DESCRIPTION:The seismic effects of COVID-19\, Black Lives Matter and Brexit have exposed endemic racial inequalities in the UK. Policy responses are mixed but encouraging entrepreneurship amongst ethnic minority communities is likely to form part of the solution. For 20 years\, the Centre for Research in Ethnic Minority Entrepreneurship (CREME) has operated at the intersection of debates on inequality and enterprise\, and worked with practitioners to ‘make a difference’. CREME’s modus operandi is to promote change with practitioners whilst pursuing theoretically informed research. SUMMARY:ECSB Webinar "Entrepreneurship by design: a pedagogy of making for entrepreneurial education"
DESCRIPTION:Entrepreneurship by Design is a pedagogic approach to entrepreneurship education to help transform creative ideas and early-stage business concepts into viable products and services. The approach also helps designers\, inventors\, and developers adopt an entrepreneurial mindset to identify business opportunities when creating new products and technology solutions through a unique mix combining design and business development toolkits. The method aims to help both groups to reduce the gap between ideas and markets. On the entrepreneurs’ side\, the gap typically originates around either lack of sufficient user research and experimentation or deficiency in design skills. On the designers’ side\, the gap is due to the inability to identify business opportunities arising from the design process itself. The proposed method develops around a framework that combines the following ingredients:\n1. Empathy and Human-Centered Design\n2. Entrepreneurial Creativity as ambivalent mindset and collective intelligence\n3. The development of Makers’ skills grounded on prototyping and effectuation mentality\n4. Design Science: the importance of product aesthetics and the understanding of how much complexity the users want \nHuman-Centered Design help entrepreneurs find the right balance between the desirability\, technical feasibility\, and business viability of a product. Entrepreneurial Creativity supports ways to find meaningful and attractive problems and to hone creative skills through apparently inconsistent behaviors. Prototyping will push entrepreneurs outside of their comfort zone to validate their ideas or change them based on higher awareness of technical and user constraints. It will also foster an experiential approach towards entrepreneurship. Finally\, Design Science help entrepreneurs to become aware of the importance of good Design and aesthetics to improve user experience. \nSpeaker\nDr. Luca Iandoli is Associate Dean for Global and Online Programs at St. John’s University\, College of Professional Studies\, and an Professor in the Division of Computer Science\, Mathematics\, and Science. He has published +150 papers on the analysis of interfirm collaboration\, collective intelligence in online networks\, and digital entrepreneurship\, serving as a member of the editorial board of several academic journals. Dr. Iandoli’s current research focus is on collective intelligence\, interaction design\, and product aesthetics\, and their application to the development of innovative products and entrepreneurial opportunities. \nThe webinar is open to ECSB & ISBE members.
