SUMMARY:10th Effectuation Conference: Effectual Impact: The Entrepreneurial Role in Connecting Society
DESCRIPTION:The 10th Effectuation Conference theme is “Effectual Impact: The Entrepreneurial Role in Connecting Society”.  Effectuation has inspired a generation of researchers and practitioners to see entrepreneurship through a different lens. By focusing on means at hand\, letting go of preconceived plans\, building through collaboration\, and embracing uncertainty\, aspiring entrepreneurs have earned a toolbox that catalyzed the design of more creative and durable businesses. \nEach year\, our community expands through the valuable exchanges that occur at our conference. These include the design of new research projects\, the development of educational tools\, and critical debates on the far-reaching impact of effectual thinking. This year\, we will dedicate the 10th Effectuation Conference to “The Entrepreneurial Role in Connecting Society”.  We invite researchers\, authors\, educators\, policy makers and other persons of interest to submit their work.  Come to the conference to engage in a discussion about how effectuation can be practiced in the real world! \nDuring our two days together\, we will explore: \n\nHow can effectuation be practiced by entrepreneurs and managers?\nWhat other disciplines can benefit from effectuation theory? And how?\nWhat is the value of effectuation when uncertainty is low(er)?\n\nEffectuation is at the vanguard of entrepreneurship research and practice as a scientifically validated method that arms aspiring entrepreneurs with a toolkit to design bold\, creative\, and unexpected solutions. SUMMARY:Small Acts\, Big Changes: Connecting Social and Everyday Entrepreneurship
DESCRIPTION:“Everyday-everyone” entrepreneurship (EEE)\, which often manifests itself in low-growth\, low-tech and low-innovation new ventures\, can address important social challenges through grassroots initiatives that create\nmeaningful local impact. SUMMARY:Nurturing Responsible Entrepreneurs - Educator Workshop
DESCRIPTION:How ethics could help towards productive entrepreneurial action\nSociety needs more entrepreneurial initiatives to help solve the pressing challenges of tomorrow. But to avoid repeating the mistakes of the past — and to navigate an increasingly complex and interconnected world — we need entrepreneurs who engage in responsible\, ethically grounded action. \nIn this workshop\, we’ll explore how to teach entrepreneurial responsibility by examining it through two distinct ethical perspectives. We’ll consider how these perspectives influence decision-making across the entrepreneurial journey\, from initial intentions to real-world consequences. \nThe session will also provide practical strategies for bringing these ideas into the classroom. Participants will experiment with gamified activities that engage students in ethical reflection\, helping them better understand the moral dimensions embedded in entrepreneurial processes. \nBy the end of the workshop\, participants will have:\n\nExplored the concept of ethical dualism and considered its relevance to entrepreneurial decision-making.\nReflected on how ethical considerations shape different stages of the entrepreneurial process.\nEngaged with practical methods for using gamification to teach ethical dilemmas in entrepreneurship.\nDiscussed how to guide students in examining responsible entrepreneurial action in light of economic\, ecological\, and social sustainability.\n\nABOUT THE INSTRUCTOR\nGustav Hägg holds a PhD from Lund University\, Sweden\, in the field of entrepreneurship education and entrepreneurial learning\, with a focus on how reflective thinking can be more effectively integrated into the learning processes of student entrepreneurs. SUMMARY:ESU 2025 Conference and Doctoral Programme
DESCRIPTION:ESU 2025 Conference and Doctoral Programme will be held at Southampton Solent University on September 1-6\, 2025. \nESU Concept \nThe aim of ESU is to strengthen European research and networks in entrepreneurship by focusing both on academic sessions and on the culture and heritage that the host country and region have to offer. \nESU also provides a friendly environment for young scholars to interact and bond within the research community\, and to learn important skills for their future careers. At ESU\, supervisors\, researchers\, and doctoral students from international institutions\, active in entrepreneurship research and education\, come together to share experiences and create new international networks\, in a supportive environment. \nThe ESU Doctoral Programme is organized in the following format: \n\nPlenary sessions on specific topics with keynote speakers who will inspire and invite critical reflection on a variety of topics related to entrepreneurship. The topics typically include topical topics on entrepreneurship\, innovative methodologies\, publication and review process\, career in academia and beyond with your PhD in entrepreneurship.\nGroup discussions and presentations where you will have the opportunity to present your work in your group\, discuss the work of your peers\, and receive feedback from experienced scholars.\n\nThere will be three groups for the doctoral programme: \n\nEarly-Stage Group: Students in this group have not started their doctoral studies or are in their first year. They present their research proposals.\nWork in Progress Group: Students in this group are in the middle of their PhD studies and will present their early-stage research.\nWriting-up group: Students in this group are close to completing their PhD research and will present their result papers.\n\nParticipating in the ESU Doctoral Programme and completing all its tasks gives you up to 6 ECTS equivalent. The detailed description of the tasks is described here. \nThe Conference Day \nIn addition to the Doctoral Programme\, the ESU Conference offers regular conference tracks open to all attendees. All presentations will take place on the Conference Day\, Wednesday 3rd September 2025. In particular\, we invite the following scholars to send their papers: \n\nPostdocs (holding a postdoctoral position). They are invited to present their own work and act as speakers in the conference sessions. They can also be invited to act as junior coaches for PhD students and have some dedicated group presentations.\nAcademics (Professors/Lecturers) are invited to present their own paper in the conference sessions. DESCRIPTION:The ENTERYNG WORKSHOP “ENTreprenEurship Research workshop for YouNG scholars” (formerly known as AEM-TIM workshop and DREAMT-CYFE workshop) represents an opportunity for PhD students and early-career scholars to discuss their research collecting constructive feedback from a dedicated group of scholars who have been involved with the workshop over the years. Beyond fostering fruitful discussions\, the workshop also aims to build an international community of emerging researchers focused on entrepreneurship\, innovation\, international entrepreneurship and family business\, while connecting them with experienced\, senior academics. Participants will benefit not only from feedback on their working papers but also professional development keynotes delivered by internationally renowned scholars. DESCRIPTION:The 9th Effectuation Conference will be organised prior the RENT 2024 Conference on 12-13 November 2024 in nantes\, France. The conference theme is “Effectuation: Bridging Research and Practice”.  Effectuation has inspired a generation of researchers and practitioners to see entrepreneurship through a different lens. By focusing on means at hand\, letting go of preconceived plans\, building through collaboration\, and embracing uncertainty\, aspiring entrepreneurs have earned a toolbox that catalyzed the design of more creative and durable businesses. \nEach year\, our community expands through the valuable exchanges that occur at our conference. These include the design of new research projects\, the development of educational tools\, and critical debates on the far-reaching impact of effectual thinking. This year\, we will dedicate the 9th Effectuation Conference to “Bridging Research and Practice”.  We invite researchers\, authors\, educators\, policy makers and other persons of interest to submit their work.  Come to the conference to engage in a discussion about how effectuation can be practiced in the real world! \nDuring our two days together\, we will explore: \n\nHow can effectuation be practiced by entrepreneurs and managers?\nWhat other disciplines can benefit from effectuation theory? DESCRIPTION:The 7th Paper Development Seminar (7PDS) aims to help participants develop research results into papers that may be suitable for publication in top-tier academic journals. The 7PDS is Co-organized with GEM-Spain (Observatorio del Emprendimiento de España\, www.gem-spain.com). \nPapers/proposals applying a process perspective to entrepreneurship are welcome. We are open to any contributions analysing the entrepreneurial process\, may they be conceptual or empirical and\, in this latter case\, using quantitative (ideally longitudinal\, but also cross-sectional) and/or qualitative methods. \nAdditionally\, the 7PDS is associated with the InsEnt SIGs “Institutions and Entrepreneurship Special Interest Group” at ECSB (https://ecsb.org/insent-sig/). A special session will be devoted to the role of Institutions in Entrepreneurship. \nSubmissions will be peer-reviewed. Those deemed of highest potential by the organizing committee will be invited to participate. SUMMARY:Teaching Entrepreneurship in degrowth economics: Exploring the potential and challenging the limits
DESCRIPTION:What would entrepreneurship look like in a world where economics was the science of social provisioning within material boundaries\, as is the case for degrowth economics? And how might we convey such an approach through our teaching in Entrepreneurship Education\, where we aim to inspire students for a transformed future? \nThis panel discussion explores the nature\, potential\, and limits of entrepreneurship education in degrowth economics. Post-consumerist values\, planetary limits to economic growth\, and the localization of value chains challenge conventional beliefs about economic growth including key assumptions in the present capitalistic system and promotes a paradigm shift towards degrowth. Despite the momentum toward degrowth\, educational approaches\, teaching methods\, and tools in entrepreneurship education remain anchored in growth-centric ideologies\, like green growth or sustainable growth. This raises critical questions: Can alternative paradigms find a place in entrepreneurship education? Are the established teaching principles still relevant\, or is a fundamental redesign necessary? How can these changes be practically incorporated into the educational landscape? \nThis ECSB co-branded panel discussion facilitates a critical discussion about the intersection of entrepreneurship education and degrowth by exploring both the potential and limits of a degrowth pedagogy in entrepreneurship education. DESCRIPTION:An event with Manchester Metropolitan University and the University of Liverpool to explore the relationship between – and need for action regarding – Enterprise Education and Planetary Sustainability. \nWednesday 13 December 2023\, 2.15 – 4.15pm UTC +1\n \nSummary\nThis online event draws from research and action developed last year through an EEUK EERPF project – ‘Enterprise Education and Planetary Sustainability: What can EE do?’ \nThe session will start with a keynote from Dr Matteo Giusti\, a Future Fellow in Sustainability Science from the University of Surrey. His research looks at human-nature relationships at the individual and social scale to understand how modern civilisations might regenerate themselves towards a more sustainable future. Matteo leads a research programme on “Cultural Shifts on Sustainable Systems” at the Institute for Sustainability to produce knowledge\, policy recommendations\, and creative works that make sustainability the new normal. His keynote presentation will set the scene for the session by focusing on the fundamental drivers of unsustainable development and how our shared culture and relationship with nature has transformational potential. This will go at the core of the links between Enterprise Education and Planetary Sustainability. \nFollowing this\, insights and results from the EEUK/EERPF project ‘Enterprise Education and Planetary Sustainability: What can EE do?’ will be shared. The project\, developed by Dr Catherine Brentnall from Manchester Metropolitan University and Dr David Higgins from the University of Liverpool\, involved piloting a workshop process to catalyse change (towards sustainability) in Enterprise Education. \nFollowing a brief introduction to the project and the resources available to replicate the workshop process\, Catherine will share the results of a review into entrepreneurship and planetary boundaries and the possibilities of regenerative business design; and David will share the development of a new module which encompasses ethics and morals for more ecologically aware entrepreneurship. \nAttendees will have the opportunity to discuss and share practice in a plenary session and learn more about the development of a new EEUK Special Interest Group being proposed in this area. \nBenefits to delegate: \n\nThe opportunity to consider and question the role of Enterprise Educators and Enterprise Education in relation to planetary sustainability\, the climate crisis and ecological breakdown.\n\n\nRe-imagine the sort of practice and research that Enterprise Educators should pursue to contribute to moving away from Business as Usual.\n\nEngage in dialogue and connect with colleagues who share an interest or concern in this area. \nFREE TO ATTEND\nAs this Enterprise Exchange event is the latest development from a project that was funded by the EEUK Enterprise Education and Research Project Fund (EERPF)\, there is no fee for non-members to attend so that participation is as wide as possible. SUMMARY:8th Effectuation Conference: Building the Global Effectual Classroom
DESCRIPTION:Effectuation is at the vanguard of entrepreneurship research and practice as a scientifically validated method that arms aspiring entrepreneurs with a toolkit to design bold\, creative\, and unexpected solutions. In our post-pandemic world where global challenges threaten to upend our lives with unprecedented crises\, teaching effectuation as means to forge better entrepreneurs was never this urgent. \nThe 8th effectuation conference theme is “Building the Global Effectual Classroom”. We invite authors to submit their work and come to the conference to engage in a discussion about bringing teaching\, practice\, and research by leveraging our global community with a presence in all five continents. Besides the traditional conference discussion\, we will host a mastermind of both experienced and new researcher/educators aiming to launch a global research consortium that blends scientific rigor\, empirical relevance\, and impact. \nCo-branded with ECSB and scheduled in tandem with the RENT Conference\, the 2023 Effectuation Conference will take place in Gdansk\, Poland. DESCRIPTION:PhD Workshop at Leuphana University Lüneburg: Ethnographic Methods to Study Organizations and Entrepreneurship on 23-24 October 2023\nThis PhD Workshop (sponsored by the ECSB) focuses on equipping junior scholars with fundamental skills in conducting ethnographic fieldwork and providing a space for reflective interaction. \nContent and Learning Objectives\nThe workshop is divided into two days\, the first laying the foundations of ethnographic methods in the field of organization and entrepreneurship studies\, while the second highlights the ‘doing’ of ethnography. The workshop covers a general introduction to ethnography and its uses in organization and entrepreneurship studies\, discusses core readings and exemplary studies\, highlights the methodological specificities and ethical challenges\, and explores the practicalities of doing fieldwork and producing and publishing ethnographic articles e.g.\, with the use of vignettes. Additionally\, participants are encouraged to bring their own research project and present and discuss it with the group.\nAfter this course\, the participants have an understanding of key uses and misuses of ethnographic methods within organization and entrepreneurship studies\, have an understanding of their role as ethnographers in the field\, are able to design studies relying on ethnographic methods and approaches\, and have an understanding of existing strategies to communicate their findings in academic articles. \nParticipants\nThe course is open to PhD students and postdoctoral researchers that have a basic understanding of qualitative research methods and ethnography and conduct research on organizations or entrepreneurship. SUMMARY:Online workshop: Crafting spaces for entrepreneurial learning
DESCRIPTION:Considering the significance of innovation and creativity in entrepreneurship\, crafting spaces that inspire students is something that universities have rightly started to prioritise. But what really makes a space inspiring? How can physical environments be conducive to new ideas? \nThe objective of this online workshop is to investigate the factors that contribute to the innovativeness of a space and discover how that space encourages entrepreneurial activity. Elusive as they may be\, these factors have been studied and this workshop\, led by Luke Pittaway\, will uncover the most relevant research findings and methodologies on understanding and harnessing their influence. \nDuring the workshop\, participants will: \n\nGain insights into how physical infrastructure actively contributes to fostering innovation and driving entrepreneurial outcomes\nFocus on the different forms and types of spaces that have been developed within the United States and examine the roles they play\nExplore a step by step guide for assessing and designing new physical infrastructure for entrepreneurship on university campuses\n\nABOUT THE INSTRUCTOR\nDr. Pittaway is the Copeland Professor of Entrepreneurship at Ohio University and a Justin G. Longenecker Fellow at USASBE. His research focuses on entrepreneurship education and learning and he has a range of other interests\, including entrepreneurial behavior\, networking\, entrepreneurial failure\, business growth\, and corporate venturing. In 2018\, Dr. Pittaway was nominated and selected to be USASBE’s Entrepreneurship Educator of the Year. \nPARTICIPATION\nThe workshop is open free-of-charge to educators from all universities and disciplines. DESCRIPTION:Climate Tipping Points and Social Tipping Points \nThis online event provides an opportunity for those involved in Enterprise and Entrepreneurship Education and Support (EEES) to (re)consider their work in relation to unfolding climate and ecological breakdown and reflect on how their practice can develop and adapt. \nAttendees will hear from Professor Tim Lenton\, Founding Director of the Global System’s Institute at the University of Exeter\, whose research involves understanding the earth as a system\, modelling climate tipping points and identifying positive tipping points towards sustainability. \nFollowing this\, two new projects which aim to contribute to positive tipping points towards sustainability in EEES are introduced. \nCatherine Brentnall\, from the University of Huddersfield\, and Dr David Higgins\, from the University of Liverpool\, will introduce a research project ‘Enterprise Education and Planetary Sustainability: what can EE do?’\, funded by Enterprise Educators UK (EEUK). This project is harnessing the system change perspective of emergence (Holman\, 2010)\, to develop a process and workshop intervention to catalyse new connections\, conversations and action towards sustainability in Enterprise Education. \nSerxia Lage Arias\, from IES Fernando Wirtz\, will introduce the TrEE project (Transforming Enterprise Education)\, a collaboration between 6 universities\, funded by the European Union. The TrEE project proposes that Enterprise Education decouple itself from (high growth) businesses and instead put its (creative) potential to work to enact more just futures for people and planet. The project aims to elaborate pedagogical approaches\, develop and validate course designs and create teacher materials and training. \nThis event is delivered by the University of Huddersfield’s Enterprise Team\, in partnership with the University of Liverpool Management School and ECSB. \nBenefits of attending: \n– The opportunity to consider\, question and re-imagine the role of EEES in relation to the climate crisis and ecological crisis as society tries to shift to a sustainable pathway. \n– Ideas for how to take action\, learning from two live projects working in this area. \n– The opportunity to connect with sustainability-interested colleagues and practitioners to share practice and build connections. \nThis is an ECSB co-branded event. SUMMARY:6th Paper Development Seminar
DESCRIPTION:Call for papers / proposals: “Entrepreneurship Process Research” \nThe objective of the 6th Paper Development Seminar is to help participants develop research results into papers that may be suitable for publication in top-tier academic journals. The 6th paper development seminar is co-organized with GEM-Spain (Observatorio del Emprendimiento de España\, www.gem-spain.com). \nPapers/proposals applying a process perspective to entrepreneurship are welcome. We are open to any contributions analysing the entrepreneurial process\, may they be conceptual or empirical and\, in this latter case\, using quantitative (ideally longitudinal\, but also cross-sectional) and/or qualitative methods. \nSubmissions will be peer-reviewed. Those deemed of highest potential by the organizing committee will be invited to participate. Selected participants will be offered the opportunity to submit a full paper (if they did not do so initially). Extended abstracts may also be presented at the seminar. The objective is to develop a productive and intimate work environment. For this reason\, we will limit the number of proposals/papers to be accepted into the seminar to a maximum of 20. \nECSB supports the 6th Paper Development Seminar in Entrepreneurship Process Research through the ECSB Event Fund initiative. This 6PDS is also a co-branded ECSB event. The ECSB will award a free one-year membership to the presenting author of the best paper/proposal presented at the 6PDS. \nThe submission deadline for papers/proposals is January 31st\, 2023. \nSee the Call for papers (pdf)
