Topic Summary:
Traditional masculine gender norms and values are often associated with entrepreneurship and business success. In many societies, masculinity is often linked to traits such as competitiveness, risk-taking, assertiveness, and individualism, which are also seen as key traits for successful entrepreneurship. Historically, entrepreneurship has been largely dominated by men, and women have often faced significant barriers to entering the field. This has led to the development of a “masculinized” culture around entrepreneurship, which can create challenges for other marginalized groups seeking to start their own businesses.

Our panellists are experts of gender and masculinities in the context of entrepreneurship. The purpose of this symposium is to debunk some of the myths associated with how masculinities play out in entrepreneurship by exploring: Entrepreneurial Masculinity as a historical construct; Role model selection process in the context of male entrepreneurship; Gender dynamics and masculinity in family business contexts; Visualising the aesthetics of embodied masculine corporate and entrepreneurial identities; Entrepreneurial masculinities and fatherhood.

The event is organised by Gender and Entrepreneurship Special Interest Group.
